Similarities!

In class, we have been telling each other creation stories. It's been fantastic; I've highly enjoyed listening to all the different myths from around the world and how they all converge on certain aspects, and how through telling and retelling, a myth can take on a new form and masquerade as a completely different creation myth while not quite covering up its tracks.

For example, we heard many creation myths talking about "earth-divers", or animals that would dive down into the water to bring earth back up to a higher being that would then create land from the small bit of earth from the bottom of the ocean. We must have heard at least seven different versions of this tale, yet each one was different and new. It was wonderful.

One theme that I kept hearing was the removal of a god or goddess's eyes to make the sun, moon, and stars. It's kind of comforting in a way; this means that the higher being is always watching us, day or night.

That notion can be either comforting or terrifying depending on how you look at it.
